Marine Structure

SKAPS Nexatube geotextile containment units are used in hydraulic and marine engineering projects as an alternative to traditional rock structures to provide protection during storm events by preventing ocean surges or breaking and minimizing storm surges.

SKAPS Nexatube containment units are made from high strength geosynthetic fabric that are filled with sand or dredged material from the project site, are filled in-place underwater or along shorelines to create stable structures for erosion protection and coastal stabilization.  As the containment units are integrated into the natural landscape, with minimal environmental impact.

Typical Nexatube Marine & Hydraulic Applications:

  • Coastal erosion protection
  • Riverbank stabilization
  • Breakwaters and dikes
  • Dune cores
  • Wetland and habitat restoration
  • Submerged marine structures
  • Land reclamation
  • Artificial island creation

Marine Structure Key Advantages:

  1. Use of Local Materials
    • Filled with sand or dredged sediments from the project site
    • Eliminates or reduces the need to transport rock or aggregate
  2. High Hydraulic and Geotechnical Stability
    • Larger size and weight compared to individual rocks
    • Greater width-to-height ratio
    • Increased contact area between tube units resulting in even landscaping
    • Resistance to waves and currents
  3. Multiple Engineering Functions
    • Confinement – Holds sand or sediment in place preventing sediment migration
    • Erosion Control – Protects shorelines and riverbanks
    • Filtration – Allows water to pass while retaining soil or sand
  4. Installation
    • Installation is easy even in difficult marine conditions
